Gutters need to be cleaned regularly to make sure they continue working and to prevent damage to the house. Many homeowners opt to do this on their own as they’re under the assumption doing so will save money. Unfortunately, cleaning the gutters can be dangerous, and homeowners won’t save any money if they end up missing work and having to pay thousands in medical bills if they’re injured. Some common injuries from gutter cleaning include the following.

    Falling From Roof

Often, the easiest way to reach into the gutters is from the roof. However, being on the roof, especially if it’s wet from cleaning the gutters, is dangerous. Without proper safety gear or training, it’s all too easy to slip and fall off the roof. It’s also possible for clothing to catch on something, leading to the person becoming off-balance, which can cause them to fall. Many property owners who do this end up with severe or permanent injuries as a result.

The Ladder Moving While You’re Climbing

When going up or down the ladder, if it’s not in a secured location, it can move, causing the person to be off balance and fall. It’s also possible to slip and fall off the ladder if it’s wet. If a pressure washer is used to help clean the gutters, the ladder moving due to a wet surface on the roof or the person slipping due to a wet ladder can be more likely to occur.

    Cuts From Gutter Materials

Those who do clean the gutters on their own will want to wear thick, cut-proof gloves the entire time they’re on the ladder or roof. Materials on the gutters can be sharp, which means it’s easy to suffer a cut. Cuts can be deep and require staples to fix. Even if cuts are not serious, infections are possible when contaminated water in the gutters gets into a cut.

    Electrocution

Water and power tools don’t mix. Yet, many people use power tools to help clean out the gutters. It’s crucial to be aware of electrical hazards near the roof, such as power lines that may not be in great condition or using any power tools. Otherwise, the person cleaning the gutters could be electrocuted while doing the job.

    Injuries From Tools

Tools used to clean the gutters or to complete minor repairs are capable of causing serious injuries. Not only can the tools cause injuries, but if they jerk forward or backward, the person can become unstable and end up falling. Tools have to be used with care to prevent accidents.

Cleaning the gutters needs to be done, but it’s not a DIY job. Often, it’s more dangerous than homeowners may realize. Instead, it’s a good idea to have a Gutter Cleaning Company tackle the job. They have the training and experience to do the job right as well as the right gear to make sure they’re safe at all times. Call today to learn more about professional gutter cleaning or to schedule a time to get the job done.
