Asphalt shingles have long been the roofing industry’s standard, but they come in various types. While some homeowners may perceive all asphalt shingles as identical, however, there are distinctions.

Understanding these differences can impact roofing decisions significantly. From architectural to three-tab shingles, each type offers unique benefits and aesthetics, challenging the notion of asphalt shingles as a singular entity.

If you ever need a trustworthy roofing contractor with decades of experience, then you must contact Kontz Construction. This is a fully licensed and insured company, and all of its employees undergo background checks.

The following are a few different types of asphalt shingles available in the market.

    1. Strip shingles

Strip shingles, also known as 3-tab shingles or strips, are basic asphalt shingles with a flat appearance resembling slate. Made from a single asphalt layer, they are lightweight and cost-effective.

Strip shingles dominated the market until the 1980s, when designer shingles became popular.

Today, they are commonly used in inexpensive home construction or for re-roofing projects on homes with existing strip shingles. XT 25 strip shingle is one of the popular options in this category.

    2. Dimensional shingles

Dimensional shingles, also called architectural or laminate shingles, are the dominant asphalt shingle type. Featuring multiple layers of asphalt for a thicker appearance, they mimic wood shake and natural slate roofs.

They are heavier than strip shingles and provide better warranty protection. The landmark shingles exemplify this style, renowned for their durability and aesthetic appeal.

    3. Architectural asphalt shingles

Architectural, or dimensional, shingles offer a varied pattern, adding depth to roofs and emulating wood shake.

They are not only the preferred asphalt shingle but also the most widely used roofing material overall for homes.

    4. Luxury asphalt shingles

Luxury, or designer, shingles represent the high-end category, resembling natural slate tile roofs. Larger, more durable, and boasting superior curb appeal, they are the priciest asphalt shingle option, offering premium aesthetics and performance.

    5. Impact-Resistant Roofing Shingles

Impact-resistant shingles are specially engineered to endure hail or debris impact. They incorporate various modifications for this purpose.

Some have reinforced backs with fabric, while others feature asphalt mixed with polymers like styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), providing a rubberizing effect.

These enhancements enhance the shingles’ ability to absorb impact energy, reducing the likelihood of cracking, denting, or other damage.

    6. Slate tile shingles

Slate tile roofing shingles consist of thin pieces of natural stone, which collectively contribute substantial weight to a roof when installed.

Due to this weight, roofs require specific design or reinforcement to support slate tile shingles, contributing to the complexity and cost of their installation compared to other roofing options.

What should you know before going for roof replacement?

After reviewing this article, you are likely to have a clear understanding of which asphalt shingle suits your needs.

For most homeowners, architectural asphalt shingles are the preferred choice, offering a balance of quality, durability, and affordability.

Luxury shingles are unmatched if budget permits. Selecting the right shingle is just one aspect to ponder before a roof replacement. Other factors like durability and aesthetics are also crucial.
