If your furnace is broken, there are times it will give you a warning that it is not working well. In most cases, this shows up as changes in its sound, heating, or cycling. These are signs that it may be starting to fail.

Identifying these warnings can be a great way to catch the small issues before they worsen.

    Strange or unusual noises

Your furnace will produce noise as it starts and stops. But if it is new or unusual, it should be investigated. Beware of unusual sounds like:

    • Banging
    • Rattling
    • Squealing
    • Grinding
    • Buzzing.

    They could indicate:

    • Loose parts
    • Worn blower motor
    • Ignition system problems.

If the sound seems unusual and not like you’re used to, it is wise to get the furnace checked instead of waiting for it to pass.

An uneven heating around the home

Are some of the rooms noticeably warmer than others? The issue may not be due to poor insulation or closed vents. It could be the furnace.

The system might be struggling. Consequently, it may not be able to maintain a consistent heat distribution.

    This can be caused by:

    • Blocked filters
    • Air flow issues
    • Ductwork issues
    • Furnace inefficiency.

If it continues to occur after venting and changing the filters, a professional assessment may be warranted. Technicians who offer Calgary furnace repairs can help you to find out the problem before the heating system shuts down completely.

    Frequent cycling

If the furnace turns on and off more frequently than normal, it could be having a short cycling issue. This may occur due to:

    • A dirty filter
    • Wrong thermostat setting
    • Low airflow
    • A broken part.

Short cycling should not be overlooked. The repeated starts and stops can cause wear on the system and can keep your home from achieving a comfortable temperature.

    Rising energy bills

Are your heating bills higher than usual? Sometimes it’s due to the furnace. It is operating more than it needs to. This happens due to component degradation and/or reduced airflow.

Of course, energy prices and outdoor temperatures can also affect your bills. If your heating system suddenly increases without a clear reason, though, that is a good sign to look at the condition and efficiency of your heating system.

    Defective valves and switchers

Cover a vent during the furnace’s operation. If the airflow seems noticeably reduced, then it could be that:

    • The filter is clogged
    • The duct is blocked
    • The blower is broken
    • There is a blockage in the airflow.

The first step is to change the filter. But if the flow is still weak, it needs to be checked out.

    Unusual odors

If you smell dust at the start of your furnace season, this is normal. If burning is occurring on a regular basis, or if you smell unusual chemical or electrical smells, these are different and should not be ignored.

Even worse, you could smell a strong gas odor. In that case, evacuate the property. Then adhere to your local gas company’s emergency protocols. Don’t self-diagnose the furnace.

    Last words

Your heating system may remain dependable with routine filter change, expert maintenance, and quick attention to odd noises, smells, cycling, or airflow.
