There are instances wherein you may have the unfortunate experience of dealing with a toilet leak. In these cases, what you may want to do primarily is to detect the root cause of the issue. This article focuses on how you will be able to detect toilet leaks for you to be able to address them properly.

    Use a Food Colouring

One of the most common ways to detect a toilet leak is through the use of food colouring. In this method, you need to first remove the tank lid of your toilet. From there, make sure to flush your toilet, as usual, waiting for the water to rise again up to the designated line of the tank. As soon as the toilet completes a flush, you can already put a couple of drops of food colouring in the toilet tank. Make sure to use a dark colour such as blue or red rather than a light one like yellow.

After putting a couple of drops of food colouring into the toilet tank, the next thing that you need to do is to put the toilet lid back and wait for about half an hour. From there, observe the toilet bowl. According to a seasoned plumber Bexley locals recommend, if the water in the toilet bowl is clear, then you have no toilet leak. However, if the water changed in colour according to the shade of the food colouring you added, then you have a toilet leak.

If you have other toilets in the house, you need to repeat the same process for each one of them. You need to do this for you to isolate whether the toilet leak is happening in only one toilet of your home or it is present in multiple ones. From there, you will be able to do the proper actions to address the problem.

    Visual Inspection

Apart from the use of food colouring to detect toilet leaks, you should also perform a meticulous visual inspection around your toilet. In this case, the first thing that you need to observe is the water level in your tank. If it is well above the overflow pipe, then you need to check the float which should rise with the water. In case the water keeps on flowing past the overflow tube, then this is an indication that you have a toilet leak. Just remember that alongside this, you should also check the flapper, which is the round rubber seal sitting at the bottom of your tank.

    Final Word

There are various ways you will be able to detect toilet leaks but the most common method practised by most household owners is through the use of food colouring. With this, the leak will prove to be apparent. Just keep in mind that you should do this in parallel to visually inspecting other signs of leaks in your toilet. As soon as you figure out the cause of your toilet leak, make sure to get in touch with a seasoned plumber in Bexley who will be able to help you address your issue immediately.
