How To Prep Rugs For Moving

You’ll quickly discover that it’s much easier to pack certain things for moving than others.

You won’t have too many worries about moving delicate items like clothes, blankets, and quilts. Why? These soft goods are virtually indestructible and will reach their new homes intact.

However, you will need to pack glassware, kitchen plates, and electronic devices as well as jewelry, art, lamps, and other fragile items. Many furniture pieces are delicate and will need to be packed carefully.

Some household items, such as area rugs, for example, are difficult to pack but can be very hard to properly protect during a move. You should also ensure that expensive rugs, such as Persian rugs, are transported safely during transit.

This article will show you how to pack your rugs for moving, regardless of their value.

Three steps to follow before you pack your rugs for the move:

To ensure that your packing process is smooth from beginning to end, you should first prepare all the rugs you have in your home. You should be prepared for whatever packing task you face.

Step 1. Decide if the rug is worth moving

Before packing area rugs for moving, you must first answer the crucial question: Are they worth moving? It is important to avoid wasting your money and time on moving common area rugs you won’t be using in the new house.

You should decide if you want to pack and move a rug on a case-by-case basis. These questions will help you make an informed decision.

    • Is the rug appealing to you? Do you like the rug?
    • Is the rug new?
    • How is the rug overall? Are they excellent, good, acceptable, or poor?
    • How is the rug quality?
    • Is the rug sentimental?

You can either dispose of or give away rugs from your local area that you have decided are not worth the effort, time, and money to move to a new home.

If you decide to bring a few rugs with you, you can go to step 2, which is about picking the right materials.

    Step 2.

You will only need to pack a few items to protect your rugs while you move.

    • Before packing the rugs for transport, clean them.
Kraft paper. Harder brown packing paper is better at protecting your area rugs while being transported. Kraft paper is about $15 per 100-foot roll. You can also use it to pack up many other items in your home.
    • Twine. Once the rugs have been properly packed, you will need twine strings to tie them up. Twine is cheap – you can get a ball of cotton household tie (roughly 400ft) for $3.
    • Packing tape. To ensure that the packing paper is secured to the rugs with regular packing tape, the bundle will not be damaged during relocation.

    Step 3. Vacuum the rug

Clean your carpets before you move them. This will ensure that they don’t carry any dirt, dust, or other debris to their new homes. You should vacuum your carpets after you move them.

If the rugs are stained and you want to bring them along, you can have them professionally cleaned before you pack them. If you are short on time, you can still have them cleaned by professional cleaners after the move.
