    Your roof does a lot more than just sit on top of your house. It protects your family, your walls, your attic, your insulation, and almost everything inside your home. But like any part of a house, a roof does not last forever. Over time, sun, rain, wind, heat, storms, and age can wear it down.

    The tricky part is that roof problems do not always look serious at first. A small stain on the ceiling. A few missing shingles. Some granules in the gutter. These things may seem minor, but they can be early signs that your roof needs repair or, in some cases, full replacement.

    Knowing what to look for can help you act before the damage spreads. Here are the most common warning signs homeowners should not ignore.

    1. You Can See Damaged or Missing Shingles

    One of the easiest ways to spot a roofing problem is by looking at the shingles. You do not always need to climb on the roof. In fact, it is safer to check from the ground or from a window if you can.

    Look for shingles that are missing, cracked, curled, loose, or bent. Missing shingles leave open areas where rain can get under the roof surface. Cracked shingles may no longer protect your home the way they should. Curled shingles usually mean the material is aging or has been damaged by heat and weather.

    You may also notice dark patches where granules have worn away. Asphalt shingles have small granules on top that help protect them from sunlight and rain. If those granules are falling off, the shingles may be wearing out.
