The importance of electricity in this modern age cannot be over-emphasized. It has become one of life’s most basic amenities, as, without it, our lives would be on standby. Imagine living in a world without electricity where you can’t access the internet, wash your clothes, communicate easily with family and friends, power your automobiles, and many more. With the cost of electricity now on the high side due to the global energy crisis affecting the demand and supply, most homes might be forced to live without power, especially through the bitterly cold winter. However, knowing how to manage your electricity consumption will save you a lot of money which is what this article is about. Here are some tips on how to manage your power consumption.

    Switch Of Appliances After Use

It has become a habit for most people not to switch off home appliances like their television, air conditioner, fan, and light bulbs when not in use. This habit, both costly and unsafe, accounts for 30-40% of your electricity bill. Changing this habit can be a bit challenging; hence, ensure you turn off all appliances before leaving your room/house.

    Cold Washing

A lot of energy is used when heating water for washing but thanks to technology, modern washers with suitable detergents can be able to wash your clothes with low-temperature water effectively. This might be difficult for most people, especially during the winter, but learning how to cold wash will save you a lot of money. Apart from the financial benefits of cold washing, it also increases the lifespan of apparel as heat is known to damage most textiles.

    Avoid Air Leaks

Your heaters and air conditioners work twice as much when there are so many air leaks in your home. Most of these leaks are from broken windows, gaps beneath the doors, and holes in the walls. If all these leaks can be successfully blocked, you will notice an increase in the efficiency of your heaters and air conditioners with reduced power consumption.

    Install Smart Thermostat

Installing smart thermostats in your home can help conserve energy and save money. With smart thermostats, you can program the temperature of your home, limiting the amount of energy your heaters and coolers consume. A master electrician in Montreal can install these smart thermostats at a very affordable rate.

    Take Advantage Of Natural Lights

A survey shows that lighting accounts for more than 10% of all electric bills. This percentage can be reduced to below 5% by taking advantage of the natural lights from the sun and the moon. If possible, ensure your home has south and north windows to maximize light from the sun while reducing the amount of heat it generates. However, when using electrical bulbs, use energy-saving bulbs to conserve energy.

    Bottom Line

If you have to be able to implement these tips and your electricity bill is still high, moving to renewable energy like solar will be advisable.
