It can be hard to know where to begin when you are ready to build your dream bedroom closet. These are some questions that you may want to ask yourself:

    • Are you a good seamstress?
    • Are you looking to organize your belongings behind doors, or in drawers.
    • Are you a shoe-lover?
    • Are you able to share your closet space with your spouse, or other family members? (If so, read our post on maximising shared closet space!

After you have established the basics of your closet design, you can start to think about the pieces that will make up your dream closet. These closet customizations may be a good fit for you.

    Folding vs. Hanging

You’ll likely want to combine both of these with your closet. You need to decide how much space you have for folded clothes and what space you need for hanging clothes. Begin by looking at what clothes you have and what you will put in your new closet. Make sure to leave enough space for any new items you might acquire over the years.

Double Hanging The best way to maximize vertical wall space is double or triple hanging. Double hanging will give you twice the space for blouses, shirts and pants. You can add triple-level hanging bars to your ceiling if you have the space.

Long Hanging– Make sure to measure the space needed for longer pieces of clothing, such as dresses and coats. Long hanging space should be at least 10% of your closet.

    Other clothing items

Shoes– No matter if you prefer flat shelves, cubbies or slanted shelves, at least one of these will give you the space you need to store and organize your shoes.

Accessories – Do I want a valet rod or belt rack tie, rack or inserts for my jewelry drawer? It all depends on what accessories you wish to show off and keeps the smaller pieces from getting lost.

    Storage Space

Floor or Wall Mount: For true built-in furniture, a floor-mounted closet system is the best choice. Wall mounted systems allow you to easily vacuum under carpeting and replace it.

Baskets and Hampers – A hamper or basket can make the most of your space and help to sort laundry off the floor.

Drawers– These drawers add luxury to your closet and provide a private way to organize clothes.

    The Final Touches

Cabinet Doors This is the finishing touch for a clean and modern look that has a custom feel.

Color White is a timeless, safe look. However, closets have advanced greatly in recent years with so many color options, textures, and even colored acrylic overlays. If your closet is open more than it is closed, the see-through doors will be a great choice.

Islands – An island provides storage and “counter space” to fold clothes, or place your suitcase for packing.

Trim molding– This can give the closet a finished look that resembles real built-in cabinetry.

Lighting – Do you want a chandelier? Recessed lighting? Built-ins Built-ins?
